A cutter sailboat is a classic and highly versatile rig, renowned for its power, balance, and exceptional performance on offshore passages. Distinguished by its single mast set further aft than a sloop, a cutter carries multiple headsails: typically an inner staysail and an outer headsail (such as a yankee or genoa). This configuration offers unparalleled sail flexibility and redundancy for blue-water cruisers. In heavy weather, you can fly a small, manageable staysail alone, providing a balanced and powerful sail plan that is easy to control. In lighter airs, you can deploy a larger headsail for increased power.

The primary advantage of the cutter rig is its ability to be perfectly balanced for self-steering and reduced weather helm, making long passages less fatiguing for a short-handed crew. The multiple sails also allow for a wider range of sail combinations to suit changing conditions without needing to reef the mainsail immediately. This rugged and seaworthy rig is a hallmark of many famous ocean-going yachts, prized by serious cruisers for its safety, versatility, and traditional elegance. Whether you’re considering a dedicated offshore cruiser or a sturdy coastal vessel, a boat with a cutter rig provides a proven and capable setup for confident sailing.
